STORY Guy
visits the Café Colon (Spanish for Columbus) in Santo Domingo searching
for his information. After LOLA escorts him to a bedroom upstairs, Guy
realizes he is in a brothel. In his search, he learns both the amorous
warmth and the debasing chill of touch. As Columbus made four trips to
Hispaniola, Guy calls on the Café four times. Lola names him Colon after
the explorer and herself Isabel after his first colony on the island. Guy
conquers a New World, but is defeated by a slave mentality. TOUCH
focuses on the actual distance between people. If relations are cozy; a
flat, near aspect is used (even if there is no touching). The distance
between the subjects is closed. If the interaction is cold or insensitive,
the distance between can be exaggeratedly far. Even the movement of the
walls and furniture add to the psychological aspect of one’s spatial
placement. This piece visualizes the proximity of intimacy, or the lack
thereof. |
